Acura’s flagship car in the North American market happens to be the Acura RL, which is sold under the label of Honda Legend in Japanese and other markets where the Acura brand doesn’t exist.

However, the funny part of the story is that all the RL cars are built in Japan, at Saitama facility centre.

The Acura RL has always been a re-labeled version of the next generation Honda Legend, and the current generation RL happens to be a true copy of the fourth-generation Honda Legend.

The base RSX came standard with the majority of convenience features expected for this class of car. Highlights included automatic climate control, power windows and mirrors, keyless entry, cruise control, a CD player and a moonroof. A smooth-revving four-cylinder was standard, and it came mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. The base RSX initially produced 160 horsepower, but new SAE horsepower ratings in 2006 changed the number to 155. Leather seating was the only option.

.The RSX Type-S added an in-dash six-CD changer, standard leather seating, 17-inch wheels, a more firmly tuned suspension and more powerful brakes. The Type-S also had a four-cylinder engine tuned to produce extra horsepower (200 hp, later increased to 201). A six-speed manual was the only choice for a transmission.

The RSX is somewhat familiar as a redesigned Integra. The current version has either a 160 or a 200 hp four-cylinder power plant, with the latter coming standard in the Type S. The more powerful engine makes its horses partly through an advanced valve timing technology, which shifts into high performance mode at 6,000 rpm.

Longer tune-up intervals and the return of the high-performance Type R coupe are among the few year-2000 changes for the entry-level Acuras. Integra is derived from the Honda Civic, which is being redesigned for 2001. Integra will move to Civic’s new platform for 2002, when it will likely be renamed Acura IL.

Meantime, the current 1994-vintage design continues in LS, GS, and sporty GS-R hatchback coupes and 4-door sedans. All use 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engines. GS-Rs have 170 horsepower via Honda’s VTEC variable-valve-timing system. Other models have 140 hp.

Acura 2+1 concept from designer Leon Paz is a design aimed at the youth. The aggressively designed concept looks at the people who would like a performance like the NSX, but cannot afford it. This concept will bridge the gap to provide NSX-like performance at more affordable costs. The aggressively-attractive concept is a great design, and built with focus squarely on the performance.
